Why I chose this book:

This may be the first romantic suspense book to have made Book of the Day. It’s no secret that I think “Rebecca” (Daphne Du Maurier) is one of the best thriller / suspense books every written. In “Before She Dies,” author Mary Burton creates a thrilling secret backstory for her main character Charlotte Wellington. (Of course, someone of the name of Wellington – never Smith – would be in a romantic suspense book, but that’s beside the point.) The novel is more thriller than romance, by the way. There is a murder: a dead woman in an abandoned building with the word “witch” amateurishly tattooed into her forehead. A serial killing begins. Then it turns personal and the past of hidden lies starts flying like bats from a belfry. Makes me dream I was in Manderley again.

In death, they are purified. Holding his victims under water, he washes away their sins as they struggle for their last breath. Then he stakes their bodies to the ground, exposing them for what they really are. Witches, sent to tempt and to corrupt. No one knows about defence attorney Charlotte Wellington’s murdered sister, or about her childhood spent with the carnival that’s just arrived in town. For Charlotte, what’s past is past. But others don’t agree. And as a madman’s body count rises, she and Detective Daniel Rokov are drawn into a mission that’s become terrifyingly personal.

One Response to Killer Nashville’s Book of the Day / Wednesday, May 23, 2012 / “Before She Dies” by Mary Burton

  1. I’ve had a chance to work with Mary Burton and so am especially pleased to see her BEFORE SHE DIES become the first romantic suspense title featured on Killer Nashville. And I agree with your observation of it being far more thriller than romance, which has been the trend among a number of leading writers of romantic suspense. So much of genre fiction grows richer and more diverse especially, I think, in the past decade.
